Sounds like the Yamaha’s headphone circuit may be shot. Do you hear noise and distortion if you hook up your headphones directly to the Yamaha headphone jack too? I would think it is pretty unusual for the headphone circuitry and both tape monitors to fail in the same unit. Either you are very unlucky, have grievously mistreated your poor Yamaha over the years, or are doing something wrong that is not readily apparent from my view across the interwebs most likely There should be a way to make this work if your Yamaha is in good working order.
The headphones work fine when plugged directly into the Yamaha amp. No noise or distortion. Like you, I haven’t used a cassette deck in ages. Back when I used it, though, I was unable to hear output when I pressed the “monitoring” button while recording, so maybe the Yamaha amp has been defective in that area all along. The cassette playback function worked fine, so there might be some kind of weird problem going on in there.
I suspect the Yamaha amp is defective. Twenty-six years has been a long run, and I’ve certainly gotten my money’s worth. I appreciate your assistance!
