Engine Cooling Systems Explained Our last contest consisted of selecting the order of things to check to troubleshoot an overheating engine with a “raw water” cooling system. A few of our viewers asked me to explain just what a raw water system was and how it worked. Raw water refers to the water that the boat is floating in. It makes no difference whether it is salt or fresh, both are used to cool the engine.
The process starts by drawing water into the engine through a seacock fitting and pumping it through the engine’s water jacket and ports by way of a mechanical water pump. In a raw water system the water is drawn up through the seacock by the water pump. The water flows through the engine and directly out the exhaust. This cooler water absorbs heat from the engine to help keep it cool. Most newer marine engines use an enclosed cooling system. This means that there is a small tank on the top of the engine that uses a combination of fresh water and coolant.
This fresh water is circulated through the engine and through a heat exchanger. The fresh water, in this system, absorbs the heat of the engine.
Install the Second Battery Choose a marine battery that meets the engine specs. Wet-cell batteries should be secured in a battery box. Both need tie-downs or brackets, and the positive terminals should be covered with nonconductive boots. For more safety standards, visit boatingmag.

The 2N FET is not as static sensitive as other expensive MOSFET devices used in other applications such as high power PA Amplifiers, But you must try to handle it as little as possible and try not to apply no more then 5 seconds of heat when soldering into the circuit which should be just enough to make a nice clean shiny joint.
Veroboard is suitable for the audio amplifier circuit, But I do strongly recommend the old style of wiring which is the use of laminated PCB board, Because it forms an excellent ground plain resulting in less hand capacity effects when tuning in the higher shortwave frequencies. Also do not overlook the advantage of using the valve style method such as aluminium cases and tag board.
General Construction Of The Receiver Please refer to picture 3 which is the circuit diagram and picture 4 the wiring diagram. The RF coils weather band switching is used or not are best mounted on the left hand side with the tuning capacitor in the centre. Also if band switching is used you must mount each tuning coil about 2 inches or 40 mm apart to avoid coupling effects and make sure that you keep wiring in the tuned circuits as short as possible, Particularly the SW3 high frequency coil. The other wiring is not as critical but do try to keep it as neat and short as possible. All Wiring of this receiver is supported by tagboards and points marked E are chassis earth return points in which all leads can solder direct to the copper board.
It must be mounted on veroboard and a 14 pin DIL holder is recommended to avoid the risk of damaging this IC when soldering. Also you must make sure this IC is wired or plugged into the holder with the correct polarity or it may be immediately destroyed.

They are used to connect or disconnect electrical devices from the electrical system. They help to prevent battery drain during periods of inactivity. They allow for a quick and easy way to shut down the entire electrical system in an emergency.
An optional key lock helps to prevent unauthorized use of the vessel. In addition to doing everything a battery disconnect switch does, battery selector switches permit battery selection of two or more batteries for specific purposes including starting engines, running accessories or even recharging. They allow for the use of one or more batteries in systems with one or more engines and facilitate putting batteries in parallel for emergency starting when one or both batteries are substantially discharged.
