When I studied Medieval art history in college, one of the places that most intrigued me was southern Spain. I made it to Granada and the Alhambra a couple of years later, but not to Seville. My name is Cat Gaa, and a brand storyteller once said that five words to describe me would be: Seville, cerveza, Feria, Sunshine and Siestas. I am, to the online world, the sevillamericana. I moved to Seville, the capital of southern Spain, in just after finishing college in the Midwest. A decade later, I have a Spanish husband and a career as a teacher-cum-admissions counselor for an American university abroad and recently moved to Madrid.

So this year five major cities — working with anti-racism groups Nederland Wordt Beter and Overlegorgaan Caribisch Nederland — decided to replace some black-face make up with sooty streaks.

Today was a day when I thought briefly, I should just pack this whole show up and take my ass back to America. I had to pay a visit to the local Zollamt tax office to potentially pay duties on a package I received from the States. I received a notice because my package was from an online retailer and Germany wanted to collect their VAT value added tax.
Fair enough, I went to the office, with my receipts printed out, listing all the items and their value and knew it would be an interesting morning. Because the Zollamt, or any Amt in Germany, is always an interesting and a drawn out experience. The person who has to inspect my package and assess the tax due on my items was some skinny dude with a ponytail, bad teeth and a tooth pick in his mouth. I can decipher the German word for receipt and hand him mine. In German I ask him to please slow down because despite living in Germany, my German is not so good.
So at this point he is screaming at me, the same sentence over and over, I know some words and I am close to figuring it out but something breaks in my head and I am paralyzed in confusion. How could I be so sure he was speaking English? Depending on my mood, hearing English can be comforting or intrusive because I appreciate the solitude. Whichever way I perceive it, I am certain when I hear it, the English words seem to float above all the other white noise around me and I experienced this just a few moments ago while I was in the waiting area.

Being a single expat parent As we know, being an expat is hard enough on its own. Being a parent is also hard, let alone a single parent, which brings additional difficulties to the table. Add the combination of being a single expat parent and you are bound to feel, from time-to-time or even all the time , frustrated, overwhelmed or simply strung out.
As a single expat parent in the Netherlands you may be experiencing a constant juggle between raising your children to their highest potential, scheduling time for your job and finding time to develop your social network. You may also find yourself experiencing an array of emotions about the responsibilities that you face. Expat kids raised by one parent Coincidentally, expat kids who are being raised primarily by one parent also face a unique and sometimes difficult situation.
